Barranquilla, Colombia. November 2021

Updated: May 21, 2023

After almost a month of researching homes I decided to venture into Barranquilla not just for less density, lower prices for square footage but also for the tropical and beach climate. I tried renting a car but all my serious credit cards have been cancelled leaving me only with debit cards connected straight to my investments accounts and some of them without readily available funds.

I called a few agencies but only one was available last minute on Tuesday, November 16th, so on the 17th I decided to catch a bus from Bogota to Barranquilla. The ad said only $200,000 COP roughly $50-60 USD for a one way ticket and 18 hours on the road. However due to an unfortunate series of events the bus overstayed on the hot road and arrived on Thursday the 18th at 7PM, I immediately booked an Airbnb studio in the northern side of the city and took a cab there. Immediately falling asleep.

I had no clean t-shirts in Bogota so I had to go shopping once I arrived on Friday. Luckily there was a mall nearby and I spent the early part of the day shopping, re-hydrating, scouting and planning and coordinating with the realtors to go visit some of the properties I found online.

In the afternoon I visited a property in Puerto Colombia, it is a beach city with a rich history, a record for the longest pier built in the late 19th century and an upcoming revamping of tourism. It is a two story home built around 2016, all white and modern, similar to some you would see in Miami Beach. Blue tinted glass with three rooms, a studio, and a huge terrace on the third floor (rooftop) perfect for spending refreshing afternoons or taking a sun bath. The average yearly temperatures are the same all year round at around 33C or high 80's Fahrenheit. The home does not come equipped with a hot water system neither does it have AC so It will be something I will need to install. It needs a few repairs since the last tenants recently left and I would need to spend some time making it comfortable. It is spacious and has two balconies, plus the terrace, well lit and secured. The municipio where it is located which is about 20 minutes away from my hotel in Barranquilla, reminded me very much of my grandmother's home in central Cuba, including culture, lifestyle, accents, architecture, colors, flora (etc) the rent there is $1.6 million COP or $450 USD which is within my budget and I found it peaceful and convenient.
