Canon G7X MK III. May 2022.

Updated: May 23, 2023

My mother gifted me a new camera for my trip to Colombia during which I planned to explore the jungles and needed something small, portable, yet powerful enough to document my adventures; catalogue animal and plant species, climb trees and run around through vegetation. I also wanted something elegant and well built, durable, easy to stow away and use.

Canon offered two or three models of the same tier except one was for vlogging and videography and the other two compared spec-wise but differed on price and materials. The G7x Mk. III came in silver/steel (my favorite) and looked like a professional grade gadget. Its price ranged from $600-$700 USD, and after seeing reviews and sample pics online I immediately fell in love with it. It offers a simple macros feature which is useful and comparable to that of a 2022 model cellphone, but does not compare to a professional full frame camera with exchangeable lenses. It does however offer powerful zoom with crisp focus and clean (digital) definition for close-ups. Also a superb telescope.

The pictures can be edited while being taken and you can add prebuilt filters like monochrome and other playful sets (entertaining and quick), it films full range 4K videos and I found the menu for picture quality and size to be my favorite feature. You can shoot immense raw files and they are incredibly high quality shots for such a small format, the screen tilts around for comfort and it weights almost nothing, which makes it great for night outings and jungle tree-climbing adventures. There's wifi and bluetooth built-in and it conceals a pup-up flash module which clicks away flush with the body. There is nothing negative I can say about it, the only disappointment was the macros but it is expected of such a small body.

I took it with me into the hot Caribbean and although I used it very little it still served its purpose, out in the sun and at night with low light. I shot some close-ups, which came out perfect and I was able to enjoy playing with file size and quality, which I found to be the main feature and my favorite as well. PS: The steel body makes it feel and look like a steel dreadnought and it camouflaged elegantly on sunsets.

I have attached sample shots to my photography gallery in this blog...
